Olympic champion Daniel Wiffen agonisingly missed out on a bronze medal in a tough 800m freestyle final as he finished fourth at the Tollcross Swimming Centre.

Wiffen finished in a time of 7:48.82, just over nine seconds behind Australian Matthew Galea, with whom he was battling throughout whole race for a place on the podium.

Sam Short, winner of the 400m in which Wiffen finished fifth, eased to the gold medal while fellow Aussie Benjamin Goedemans claimed silver.

The 25-year-old will also swim in the 1500m final on Wednesday, the event in which he won bronze at the Paris Olympics and the Birmingham 2022 Games.
